2020 Gibson Les Paul Special Satin Winter Cherry Mod Collection
Background:
I bought this guitar on Reverb in Feb 2025. I was looking for a Les Paul Special that was lightweight. I was captivated by the colors that Gibson offered on the Mod Collection site – I’m a huge Trogly fan too. I almost snagged a Sweet Lime LP Special – but I was too slow. Then I saw this Satin Winter Cherry LP Special appear on Reverb, and I quickly bought it.
The sound and playability of this guitar is fantastic. The neck plays great – these are Plekked from the factory, and it shows. The satin finish on the neck is smooth and fast. The frets are well finished. The pickups sound rich and full – after I adjusted them down a bit, way too “high and hot” from initial setup. The weight is reasonable at 7.4 lbs/3.4 kg and it is well balanced.
The finish quality is flawless – except for 2 marks noted below and in pics – and I didn’t expect this from Gibson. It’s got a black 4-screw pickguard, black Top Hat knobs, black pickup selector tip, plain black poker chip (no Rhythm/Treble text), plain black truss rod cover, and white Gibson Deluxe vintage butter bean tuners. The bridge, jack plate, and strap buttons are chrome. The fretboard is a pleasing “medium roast coffee” subtly grained rosewood. The headstock has a gold Les Paul Special stencil and the Gibson logo mother of pearl has a very pink hue – I cannot tell if it is tinted, I would say not, but it compliments the color really well.
And the Satin Winter Cherry finish is bewitching. I call it “Champagne”. It really changes color and iridescence depending on the light. If you look closely at the body, the mahogany woodgrain shows faintly through. The grain is subtle, varied, but evenly vertically oriented – I tried to show in pics. On the neck, it is pure satin finish with no woodgrain showing through. I usually prefer dark, ebony fretboards, but on this guitar, the rosewood suits the paint color much better. I cannot tell if the fret dots are real mother of pearl or pearloid – in either case, they are dull as compared to the logo MOP.
I am selling this guitar because I bought a lighter (6.8 lb/3.1 kg) TV Yellow LP Special from the Gibson Demo Shop at a great price that I am going to modify to my preferences. The 3 improvements that I seek are: 1) noiseless pickups (from Creamery Pickups), 2) locking tuners (Gotoh SD90-MGT), and 3) strap locks (Schaller). I feel much more comfortable modding a “standard” LP Special rather than this Mod Collection exclusive color specimen.
Note: I could not find the original listing from the Mod Collection. However, I am including links to the 2 Reverb listings I could find for this guitar.
Condition:
1.There is one almost invisible mark on the top of the headstock – I just now had trouble finding it again. Please see the highlighted pic.
2.There is a small circular depression in the finish on the treble side of the nut.
3.Otherwise, the guitar is flawless, in Mint condition.
4.UPDATE: I just discovered the original Warranty Evaluation in the case. It notes the headstock mark and a few other items. Per my same experience with my Demo Shop LP Special, these minor markdowns are imperceptible – I just cannot find some of them. I still maintain this is Mint condition because this is exactly how it came new from Gibson Mod Collection.
